Dr. Manes is an invited speaker at the ACFEI National Conference in Orlando, Florida on September 22 - 23, 2006. He will be giving a talk entitled "Linking Individuals to Digital Information." For more information, please visit http://www.acfei.com/. Abstract: "Linking Individuals to Digital Information" With technology becoming such an integral part of business and everyday life, cyber crimes are becoming both more common and more harmful. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to link individual users to a computer or specific set of data in order to adequately police and prosecute cyber criminals. Unfortunately, techniques to establish this link are very limited. However, strong similarities exist between handwriting and computer use, and handwriting sampling techniques could be used as a guide for developing computer sampling techniques. Much like handwriting, the way an individual uses a computer can be the result of education, artistic ability, physiological development, or preference, and most people have strong preferences when it comes to computer use patterns and input. Although certain characteristics may not always lead directly to an individual, the resulting general profile may be advantageous to eliminate a group of individuals rather than identify the exact culprit. This presentation discusses the results of a computer use monitoring study to show that it is possible to uniquely identify individuals using a study designed on the principles of handwriting analysis. |
