Digital Redaction for Government Agencies
10-28-2009 - Dr. Gavin W. Manes
Computer Security Institute (CSI) 2009 Annual Conference
Software used to redact digital information is a key component in the fight against accidental dissemination of electronic governmental data, particularly in responses to FOIA requests or Privacy Act compliance. However, most redaction software programs have proven ineffective at destroying digital data to the degree necessary for governmental purposes. Each redaction program is best suited for particular purposes, such as email or a specific file formats, but there is no single program that can redact all digital information with confidence. This presentation explores the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of redaction programs, as well as the appropriate use of such tools should they be the only option. Also, current alternatives to redaction will be discussed.
